What actually affects Google Maps ranking

A great deal of local SEO advice is guesswork. Here is what consistently matters, and what you can actually change.

Relevance, distance, prominence

Google states these three plainly. Distance is fixed, relevance is largely category and content, and prominence is where most of the achievable work sits.

Reviews carry disproportionate weight

Volume, rating, recency, and response rate all feed prominence, and this is the factor most businesses under-invest in.

You cannot move your premises. Almost everything else is workable.

Profile completeness

Correct primary category, full services, accurate hours and service area, and recent photographs. Incomplete profiles underperform complete ones consistently.

Consistency and authority

Matching business details across the web, plus legitimate local links and mentions establishing you as an established business.
