Ranking a service-area business without a storefront

If you serve customers at their location rather than yours, proximity works against you in a way it does not for a storefront.

Hide the address, set the area

Service-area businesses should hide the street address and define the areas served. Displaying a home address can cause guideline problems.

Proximity still applies

Google still ranks relative to the searcher, so you will naturally be stronger nearer your registered location and weaker at the edges of your area.

A service-area business cannot rely on proximity. Prominence has to do the work.

Content for the areas you serve

Genuine, specific pages for the areas you actually work in give Google something to connect you to. Thin pages listing town names do not.

Reviews mentioning locations

Reviews that naturally reference where the work happened help establish relevance across your area.

Frequently asked

Can I create listings in every town I serve?

No. Listings at addresses where you do not have a genuine staffed location breach the guidelines and risk suspension of the real profile.
